Renamo rejects agreement with Frelimo if there is electoral fraud: “We were not born to be in the opposition”

Ossufo Momade, Renamo leader and presidential candidate, announced that the Mozambican party will not participate in a new stability agreement with Frelimo if there is electoral fraud.

Presidential candidate Ossufo Momade, leader of Mozambique’s main opposition party Renamo, said he would not accept a new deal for the country’s stability if there is fraud in the October 9 general election.

“This time, yes [Frente de Libertação de Moçambique, partido no poder] cause fraud, they will not reach an agreement with me, they will have to reach an agreement with the people of Mozambique,” Momade said.

The presidential candidate of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) party spoke on Saturday at a rally in the Namuno district of the northern province of Cabo Delgado. “I will not accept it, because we were not born to be in the opposition,” he said.

If he wins the presidential election, Ossufo Momade has promised an end to armed violence in Cabo Delgado, led by insurgent attacks, some of which have been claimed by the Islamic State. Momade also said he would put an end to kidnapping crimes that occur in some cities in the country.

The Renamo leader’s reference to a new agreement with the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) is related to the fact that in August 2019 he signed the Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement, to put an end to outbreaks of armed violence between government forces and armed groups. wing of the main opposition party.

The political force never accepted the election results, which led to crises that provoked clashes between the Defence and Security Forces and Renamo’s armed wing.

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said in July that 90% of former Renamo guerrillas are already receiving pensions as part of the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) process under the Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement.

The DDR process, launched in 2018, covers 5,221 former Renamo guerrillas, of whom 257 are women, and ended in June 2023, with the closure of the Vunduzi base, the last Renamo base, located in Gorongosa district, central Sofala province.

The presidential elections on October 9 will be held simultaneously with the legislative elections and those for governors and provincial assemblies.
