  • Facebook and WhatsApp owner decides to ban Russian state press

The technology company Meta, owner of the social media platforms Facebook and Instagram and the messaging platform WhatsApp, has banned several Russian state media outlets, including RT, from accessing its platforms.

“The Russian Revolution [um grupo de comunicação estatal russo]“Formerly Russia Today, and other related entities are now banned from accessing our apps globally due to foreign interference activities,” the company said in a statement released Monday.

RT had 7.2 million followers on Facebook and one million followers on Instagram.

Meta’s decision comes three days after the US government announced new sanctions against Russian state media outlets accused of working with the Russian military and participating in fundraising campaigns to pay for weapons used in Ukraine.

Although RT has already been sanctioned for its role in spreading Kremlin propaganda and disinformation, the US State Department said its role goes far beyond influence operations.

According to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, RT is a key part of Russia’s war machine and its efforts to undermine Ukraine’s democratic allies.

“RT wants its new covert intelligence capabilities, as well as its long-standing disinformation efforts, to remain hidden,” Blinken said.

Washington accused the media outlet of also expanding its use of cyber operations with a new unit linked to Russian intelligence services, set up in 2023.
