Hungary reiterates its opposition to the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum

The Orbán-led government will formally request a derogation from the European Union’s Pact on Migration and Asylum. Hungary thus joins the Netherlands in this decision.

The Hungarian government reiterated on Thursday that it will formally request an exception to the application of the European Union’s Migration and Asylum Pact, as will the Netherlands.

The Hague’s claims have already been rejected by the European Commission because the derogation could entail a change in the current treaties.

HE Viktor Orbán’s government had also expressed its opposition to the Pact on Migration and Asylum. On Thursday, Hungarian Minister for European Affairs Janos Boka said that Budapest intends to follow the “line” announced by the Netherlands by directly calling for the non-application of the treaty.

“We will take the necessary legislative and administrative measures,” Boka said, adding that the Hungary advocates “increased border control” for “security reasons”.

The Hungarian Prime Minister, who had already publicly expressed his total opposition to the migration treaty, praised the request from The Hague. “We finally have a courageous government,” Orbán said in a message posted on social media, a medium frequently used by the Hungarian Prime Minister.

Last June, the Court of Justice of the European Union fined the Orbán government for violating the rights of asylum seekers., with a fine of 200 million euros, plus one million euros for each day of delay in payment.
