Five employees of a company operating at Lisbon airport arrested for drug trafficking

Five employees of a company operating at Lisbon airport were arrested, along with two other people, after trying to divert two suitcases containing more than 50 kilos of cocaine.

Seven people, five of whom were employees of a company operating at Lisbon airport, were arrested for drug trafficking after stealing two suitcases containing more than 50 kilos of cocaine.

According to a note published on Wednesday on the website of the Lisbon Regional Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DIAP), The seven suspects were arrested on Monday and brought before a judge for their first questioning, with all of them being placed under coercive pretrial detention..

“It is strongly alleged that the five defendants who work at the airport, in a combined effort, collected two suitcases containing narcotic products that had been transported on an aircraft from Latin America and, after diverting them from the normal luggage circuit in a surreptitious manner, managed to remove this luggage from inside the airport facilities,” reads the note from the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP).

The parliamentarian added that the five elements then went to deliver the 45 blocks of cocaine – weighing more than 50 kilos – to the other two defendants, when they were all intercepted by the authorities.

The investigation is being conducted by the Lisbon DIAP, in collaboration with the National Unit for the Fight against Drug Trafficking (UNCTE) of the Judicial Police, and remains under judicial secrecy.
