UN warns of “impending catastrophe” in Middle East

“There is no military solution that will make any of the parties safer,” says the UN special coordinator for Lebanon.

The United Nations special coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, warned on Sunday that the Middle East is “on the brink of an imminent catastrophe” with the recent escalation of violence between Israel and the Islamic movement Hezbollah.

“With the region on the brink of imminent catastrophe, it cannot be stressed enough: no military solution will make any side safer,” said the person responsible for the official X account of the United Nations mission in Lebanon.

Hennis-Plasschaert expressed concern after Israel carried out airstrikes in Beirut’s southern suburbs on Friday, killing at least 45 people, including more than a dozen senior Hezbollah officials.

The Israeli bombing came after two simultaneous explosions last week on thousands of Hezbollah members’ communication devices left 37 dead and nearly 3,000 injured in different parts of Lebanon.

The international community (the United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom) has already expressed concern about the escalation of tension in Lebanon following the recent attacks and has called for an urgent ceasefire.
