Italian Minister Antonio Tajani says everything must be done to free Hamas hostages

Former President of the European Parliament and current member of Giorgia Meloni’s government believes that “Hamas bears the greatest responsibility” for the climate of tension in the region.

Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tanjani said Sunday that “everything possible must be done” for the hostages held by Hamas in Gaza following the October 7 attacks on Israel.

“This is not an easy time,” said Antonio Tajani, who is in New York to take part in the United Nations General Assembly, speaking to the American television channel Fox Antonio Tajani, alongside Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

“We have to achieve a ceasefire. As members of the G7, we are working hard,” he said, adding that “Italy is working hard on the Food for Gaza project (to bring aid to Palestinian civilians).”

“Hamas bears the greatest responsibility for this difficult situation,” he said in the interview, quoted by the Italian news agency ANSA.

Asked about immigration issues, the minister said the Italian government was achieving “good results” in reducing illegal arrivals of immigrants, “because it is working with the countries of North Africa.”

“This year we had good results. It is not easy, but we are working hard,” he continued, stating: “We are not against legal immigration, we are against illegal immigration and we must be strong to fight against human and arms traffickers.”
