Russian military secret deputy commander shot dead in Moscow

A Russian secret military deputy commander, Nikita Klenkov, was reportedly shot dead in the Moscow region. The identity of the attacker is unknown, according to Russian media cited by The Kyiv Independent.

Nikita Klenkov, 44, is said to have been deputy commander of a secret Russian military unit (known as GRU), unit 43292, which trains special operations forces.

A Telegram group cited by the Ukrainian newspaper claimed that Klenkov was shot on the side of a road in Melenki, east of Moscow. The attacker reportedly fired eight shots from a car window.

According to Tass, cited by The Kyiv Independent, Klenkov had returned home a week ago after being on the front line in Ukraine. An investigation into the alleged murder is underway.

In July, another senior GRU official was wounded in an attack in Moscow. At the time, kyiv denied involvement and presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak told independent media in Russia that he believed there had been a “defect in the car’s gas equipment.”
