Residents and activists in central Bosnia clean lake after massive flooding

Bosnia suffered deadly floods and landslides more than two weeks ago and residents and activists decided to remove debris and garbage from a lake in the flood-affected central region.

Bosnia suffered deadly floods and landslides more than two weeks ago and today a group of residents and activists decided to remove debris and garbage from a lake in the central region of the country, which was affected by flooding.

Volunteers used boats and motorized vehicles to collect plastic, wood and other objects that were carried by violent waters during the early October storm and ended up in Lake Jablanica.

The floods and landslides on the night of October 4 left 27 dead, 19 of them in the village of Donja Jablanica, where rocks from a hillside quarry, dislodged by the floods, buried houses. Roads, bridges and railway tracks were destroyed and schools are expected to reopen on Monday, according to Jablanica authorities.

Lake Jablanica is normally known for its clear, green waters, but these have been polluted by a huge island of waste, which is now being cleaned up by volunteers.

“I was born on this lake, it is normal that I am here to help,” Ibro Besic, from the nearby town of Jablanica, told the AP. “It would be a shame to leave all this rubbish floating around. “We all want to come swim here in the summer,” he added.

Bosnia has sought help from neighboring countries and the European Union, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to travel to these areas when she visits the country next week.
