Portuguese deputies defend the strengthening of gender equality in the G20

Emília Cerqueira (PSD) and Patrícia Faro (PS) are the parliamentary representatives at the 10th Summit of Presidents of Parliaments of the G20 (P20), which takes place in Brasilia, in a delegation headed by the president of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco.

The parliamentarians are part of a group of deputies and senators from the member countries of the G20 who in July, in the capital of the state of Alagoas, contributed to the drafting of the final document of the I Meeting of Women Parliamentarians of the P20, the Alagoas Charter. , which brings together several recommendations to create a more equitable future between men and women.

This document presents several recommendations to strengthen gender equality, calling for “climate justice and sustainable development” for women and girls, an “expansion of female representation in decision-making spaces” and the fight against gender inequalities and promotion of women’s economic autonomy.

Speaking to Lusa, Emília Cerqueira said that the letter was delivered on Wednesday to the leaders of the parliaments of the group of G20 countries, in the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil, expressing the expectation that there could be a final declaration this Thursday and that the recommendations presented are accepted.

“The recommendations have the support of the Portuguese delegation and have been evaluated at the highest level,” highlighted the Social Democratic deputy.

Speaking to Lusa, PS deputy Patrícia Faro considered that Portugal has improved in this aspect, but stated that there is still a long way to go.

“Women are the most qualified and every time we go up the pyramid the number decreases,” he said, adding that “decision-making positions are fundamental, it is transversal in all areas, for the construction of policies and societies that want to be democratic.” and that requires this balance.”

“We reiterate the Portuguese experience and the need for there to not be a ghetto in relation to gender equality,” he highlighted.

In the P20 session on Wednesday, in the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies, the leader of the women’s caucus of the Brazilian Senate, the country that presides over the G20 this year and which invited Portugal as an observer member, urged the presidents of the parliaments of the 20 largest economies in the world to follow these recommendations.

More than a letter of intent, this document aims to be a concrete commitment “that needs to be supported by legislative actions, public policies and international cooperation,” he highlighted.

The Brazilian presidency invited all Portuguese-speaking countries to the summit, which will last until Friday, in Brasilia, with representation from Angola, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Principe and Portugal.

On December 1, 2023, and until November 30 of this year, for the first time, Brazil assumed the presidency of the G20, under the motto “Build a just world and a sustainable planet”, with social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty. poverty; energy transitions and promotion of sustainable development in its economic, social and environmental dimensions; and the reform of global governance institutions as priorities.

During his presidency he invited Portugal, Angola, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Nigeria, Norway and Singapore to observe the organization, as well as the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).
