On the thousandth day of the war in Ukraine, the Russian ambassador to Portugal states that “it is regrettable that this issue is partially covered” in the Portuguese press, “in a Russophobic manner and without alternative points of view”. Furthermore, he accuses the West of making “irresponsible decisions” that will lead to the start of the “third world war.”
In a post on the embassy’s Facebook page, Mikhail Kamynin, who has been in Portugal since 2018, contextualizes his criticism of the national media by mentioning what he considers the three main reasons that led to the start of the conflict. It refers to the “undemocratic” coup d’état of 2014, the “discriminatory policy practiced by the Nazis who had usurped power against the populations of Donbass and Novorossiya”, and also the military support provided by NATO members to Ukraine.
“Two years ago it was possible to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis, but the collective West, which bet on Russia’s ‘strategic defeat’ on the battlefield, did not succeed. derail the peace process”. The ambassador highlights the Kremlin’s diplomatic efforts to reach a resolution to the conflict, mentioning the negotiations in Istanbul and Minsk, which he indicates were used by the West “as cover to reinforce Ukraine’s military capabilities.”
Despite Vladimir Putin’s openness to negotiations with kyiv, Kamynin accuses the “American and European political elites” of being “incapable of understanding” the current state of the conflict, which “opens the door to world war three”. According to the diplomat, Portugal and the rest of the EU countries prefer to “flood Zelensky’s regime with lethal weapons” instead of seeking to mediate possible peace scenarios, as is the case with Russian allies in Turkey and Belarus.
For the ambassador, the “green light” granted to the Ukrainians by Washington to attack Russian targets with long-range North American missiles led to “Western involvement in the conflict to the next level.“, reinforcing the words expressed by the head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, which indicate a direct involvement of the allies in the combat. For this reason, they blame the “irresponsible decisions” of Western forces for the possible “escalation of the situation in Ukraine.”
Russia says use of US missiles on Russian soil is a ‘new phase’
