This is already the deadliest outbreak ever recorded in Cape Verde. The Prime Minister affirms that the epidemic is already in a descending phase. Archipelago registers 15,732 accumulated cases
Cape Verde announced the seventh death in the official count of dengue victims, in the epidemic that has affected the archipelago for a year.
The last death was recorded on Tuesday at the Agostinho Neto Hospital, the country’s main unit, in Praia, Santiago Island, and the victim came from the municipality of São Miguel, in the northeast of the island, according to the information bulletin of the Ministry of Health.
This is the first fatality in that municipality, in addition to three deaths of residents in the capital, Praia, with the rest in Santa Cruz (Santiago Island), São Filipe (Fogo Island) and Mosteiros (Fogo Island). According to the same bulletin, Cape Verde registers 15,732 accumulated cases.
At the beginning of October, the Government of Cape Verde declared a contingency situation throughout the country, until the end of November.
The Prime Minister announced last week that the epidemic is in a phase of decline, but asked to continue with prevention, cleaning the streets and draining water, which is prone to the multiplication of mosquitoes that spread the disease.
In 2009, another serious dengue outbreak was recorded in Cape Verde, with 21,000 cases and six deaths, all on the island of Santiago. Dengue is a curable disease, but requires medical attention.
Fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, as well as skin inflammation, are part of the symptoms of the infection that, in the most serious cases, can progress to dengue hemorrhagic fever and, in the extreme, cause death.
