LONDON (AP)-UK on Thursday froze the assets of three Russian airlines, preventing them from selling £50m ($62m) seats at UK airports.
Russia’s recent war sanctions against Ukraine are preventing Russia’s largest airline, Russia, and Ural Airlines from handing over vital landing rights by state-owned Aeroflot to previously unused due to a ban on Russian planes flying to the UK.
Widespread international sanctions aimed at forcing President Vladimir Putin to withdraw troops from Ukraine are already having a huge impact on Russia, the British Foreign Office said. Russia’s oil exports, an important source of income for the Putin government, fell 30% in April, and the country’s economy is expected to shrink by 15% this year.
“As long as Putin continues his barbaric attack on Ukraine, we will continue to attack the Russian economy,” Foreign Minister Liz Truss said. “We have closed our airspace to Russian airlines. Now we’re doing this so they don’t cash out their handy seats at our airports.
