The State of California estimates that 32,000 auto mechanics will lose their jobs by 2040 if Governor Gavin Newsom’s proposal to phase out gas-powered vehicles and switch to a fleet of all-electric vehicles is implemented.
As reported by Breitbart News, in September 2020, Governor Newsom announced his plan as part of California’s goal to achieve 100% renewable (i.e. non-fossil fuel) energy by 2045:
Newsom said the new executive order would “eliminate” internal combustion engine sales and switch to electric vehicles, which would create jobs and allow California to “dominate” the market and address climate change. Those who already own gas powered vehicles will still stay allowed exploiting them and selling them on the secondary market.
This
Newsom cited some recent high temperatures in the state, as well as ongoing wildfires, to explain its pursuit of “ambitious targets,” but did not explain how reducing local emissions would affect the global climate enough to affect local temperatures. Although California is the sixth largest economy, it currently emits 1% of the world’s carbon emissions.
He described the new policy as an “opportunity to change” the state’s economy and viewed it as a global market for zero-emission vehicles. He did not explain why the state should ban gasoline-powered vehicles rather than allow the market to run.
Half of the state’s car mechanics could lose their jobs if this happens, CalMatters said on Tuesday:
The state estimates that approximately 32,000 auto mechanic jobs will be lost in California by 2040, as electric vehicles require less maintenance and repairs than conventional internal combustion engines.
This
According to the California Air Resources Board, approximately 64,700 jobs will be lost in the economy due to this mission. On the other hand, an estimated 24,900 jobs will be created in other sectors, so the estimated net loss is 39,800 jobs, which is the lowest amount for the entire state economy by 2040.
But no workforce in the state will be more impacted than an auto mechanic: California has about 60,910 car maintenance technicians and mechanics, and more than half of those jobs will be lost over the next two decades, if mandated, according to the Air Board. . . calculated.
President Joe Biden has promised that the new, green economy will create “productive, paid union jobs” to replace old jobs.
