Rector of the University of Porto wants to invest 100 million euros for a second four-year period

The rector of the University of Porto, António de Sousa Pereira, who takes office this Wednesday for a second four-year term, intends to invest some 100 million euros in the requalification and construction of infrastructures to study and live.

António de Sousa Pereira was re-elected rector of the University of Porto (U. Porto) on May 6 for a second four-year term, with 13 of the 23 votes cast by the members of the General Council.

At the swearing-in ceremony, which takes place at 11:00 a.m. in the Rector’s Noble Room, the Rector will present the new “investments and projects” for the institutionwhere around 100 million euros will be invested in infrastructure, U. Porto told Lusa.

At stake is the requalification of some university spaces and the construction of others, that is, new “study and research” spaces, but also new accommodation and spaces dedicated to culture and art.

Among the projects, we highlight the expansion of the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Sportsbut also the construction of more three buildings of the Faculty of Engineering.

The requalification of the Faculty of Medicine in the building shared with the São João University Hospital Center (CHUSJ), the reconstruction of the Foz Aquarium and the completion of the new University Stadium are also some of the priority projects for the next four years.

Together with the investment in the organic units of U. Porto, António de Sousa Pereira intends to create new university residencesand this bet will allow “almost doubling the supply of beds at the university”.

The investment in new university residences is being developed in conjunction with some district municipalities, such as the Oporto Chamber, with which U. Porto will present two applications to the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) for the construction of a residence in Monte Pedral, with 200 beds, and another in Morro da Sé, also with some 200 beds.

In addition to these accommodations and the university residence located in the historic center under the management of the Porto Academic Federation (FAP), which will have 20 rooms, U. Porto has more requests for the PRR, António de Sousa told Lusa Pereira in March at the time of the 111th anniversary of U. Porto.

One of the nominations is for the rehabilitation of existing beds in different residences in the cityand another two will be “exclusive” to U. Porto for the construction of a university residence in Rua Boa Hora, with around 250 rooms, and for the construction of a residence in Asprela, with around 150 rooms.

Another of the rector’s objectives for this second term is the installation of the Human and Animal Health Research Center in the municipality of Maia, as well as the new campus that will be developed in the old Leça da Palmeira refinery, in Matosinhos, whose value it is not included in the approximately 100 million euros that will be invested.

At the opening ceremony, The rectoral team will also be presented, made up of vice-rectors and pro-rectors, according to the assigned roles and areas of action. The team is made up of José Castro Lopes, Fátima Vieira, Pedro Rodrigues, Ana Camanho, Pedro Alves Costa, Maria Joana Carvalho, Joana Resende, Sónia Valente Rodrigues, Olívia Pestana, Pedro Brandão and Mário Pimentel.

The session will be attended by the president of the General Council of U.Porto, Fernando Freire de Sousa, the president of the Board of Trustees of U.Porto, Luís Braga da Cruz, the Minister of Territorial Cohesion, Ana Abrunhosa, and several members of the country’s institutions and region.
