POT. Russia could be burning gas that was supposed to reach Europe

The amount of gas reaching Europe from Russia has been declining since the war began on Ukrainian soil, and now there is a possibility that Moscow could be burning off that surplus gas.

The images of the satellite that monitors the NASA fires, advances the Finnish station Yle, show that every day, since June 17 there are flames at the Portovaya compressor station — which is managed by the Russian company Gazprom and is also in charge of transporting the gas from one place to another. June 17 is indeed a milestonesince it was from this date that gas deliveries to Germany through the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline were reduced.

According to the Finnish press, clouds of smoke were seen coming from Finland, which are associated with the burning of gas that was supposed to reach Europe. At the moment, about 20% of the amount of gas that was transported before the start of the war is arriving and Finland has not received Russian gas since May, after the sanctions imposed on Russia. Compressor stations may be reaching their capacity limit. and the flames recorded by satellite images may be related to gas burning.

To explain the situation, Olga Vaisanen, head of communications for the Finnish energy company Gasum, indicated that gas flaring can occur when there are problems in production or transportation — what might have happened to the Portovaya compressor station. For example, it may be necessary to resort to gas flaring to maintain pressure in the respective tanks or if it is not possible to deliver the gas to the customer.

Together with the NASA satellite images, German Galushchenko, Minister of Energy of Ukraine, also confirmed this option of Russia to circumvent the gas surplus. “Instead of earning millions of euros in supplies, the Russians are forced to simply burn off the gas,” the minister wrote on Facebook. “That is why the West must maintain the sanctions regime and intensify it even more,” he added.
