Swedish group Embracer announces several acquisitions, including the rights to “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit”

The Swedish group Embracer announced this Thursday a handful of acquisitions, at a time when the main companies in the gaming sector are already beginning to tighten their belts. In total, the company expects to spend a total of SEK 8.2 billion on this shopping tripthe equivalent of about 770 million euros.

The shopping list for Embracer, which was an acquisition champion last year, included deals to buy US group Limited Run Games, karaoke group Singtrix, PC game studio Tuxedo Labs, Tripwire Interactive and also the rights to intellectual property from “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit.” The company will also buy a sixth company, but chose not to disclose which company it is.

The company’s statement on the agreement to purchase the rights to JRR Tolkien’s literary works specifies the purchase of Middle-earth Enterprises, the division of The Sault Zaentz Company that owns the vast majority of the intellectual property in these works.

Through this operation, it is explained, the Swedish group becomes owner of the rights related to movies, video games, board games, merchandising, theme parks and other productions related to the two works. In other words, the acquisition of these rights already includes the series that is being developed for the Amazon Prime service, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”, whose premiere is scheduled for September 2. It is also mentioned that Embracer will also have control of other works that may still be licensed by the Tolkien Estate and HarperCollins publishing house.
