The Cypriot government said on Monday that the discovery of natural gas off the coast of Cyprus, which is estimated to contain around 70,800 million cubic meters of hydrocarbonsreinforces the European effort to combat the supply crisis.

In a statement, the Ministry of Energy explained that the discovery by the oil companies Eni (Italy) and Total (France) was made in Well Kronos-1 160 kilometers from the coast in 2,287 meters of water, within the economic area of Cyprus, and it is the second deposit found there by the Franco-Italian consortium.

Eni-Total did not provide estimates on how much gas the initial “Calypso” field found in 2018 contains. But Eni said Monday that the Cronos-1 discovery “can unlock additional potential in the area” and is part of “Successful company effort to supply more gas to Europe”.

The discovery of Chronos raises the number of deposits found in Cyprus to four.

The Energy Ministry said the Eni-Total consortium’s Tungsten Explorer drillship had headed for a new target to “assess gas quantities more accurately”.

The Cyprus government said the Russian invasion of Ukraine had given an additional boost to the search for alternative fuel sources, especially after the European Union (EU) confirmed that natural gas could act as an alternative by 2050 as part of the cleanest energy transition. .

Energy Minister Natasa Pilides said the EU’s effort to get rid of Russian gas further strengthens Cyprus’ inclusion in the energy planning of 27 member states.
