The iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco was blocked this Monday by pro-Palestinian protesters, just over six months after the start of Israel’s war in Gaza.

Aerial images show a long line of cars parked on the bridge, while the lanes in the opposite direction are completely deserted. The protesters, who prevent anyone from entering or leaving this side of the Californian city, carry a banner that reads “Let’s stop the world for Gaza.”

The demonstration is part of an initiative called “Action A15”that intends to block many of the world’s main cities “in solidarity with Palestine.”

In other parts of the United States, protesters this Monday interrupted access to the Chicago airport and Los Angeles was the scene of a demonstration.

The protest organizers’ website identifies some forty cities where actions will take place, in a wide range of countries, including Australia, Belgium, Spain, Colombia and South Korea.

“In every city, Let’s identify and block the main bottlenecks of the economy.focusing on production and traffic points, with the aim of causing the greatest economic impact,” the organizers explain on their portal.

The war was triggered by an unprecedented attack by the Islamist movement Hamas from Gaza on October 7, which killed 1,170 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP report based on official Israeli data.

More than 250 people were kidnapped and 129 remain detained in Gaza, 34 of whom died, according to Israeli authorities.

In retaliation, Israel promised to destroy Hamas, in power in Gaza since 2007, which it considers a terrorist organization, like the United States and the European Union.

The Israeli army launched an offensive that has already caused 33,797 deaths in Palestinian territory, 68 of them in 24 hours, according to the Hamas Ministry of Health.
