PCP challenges the Government to go beyond “palliative measures” to combat the effects of inflation

The PCP challenged the Government this Thursday to adopt more than “palliative and care measuresto face the increase in the cost of living for the Portuguese, commenting on the estimate of the National Institute of Statistics (INE) on inflation in August.

In a statement, communist leader Vasco Cardoso said that inflation was 9.0% in August, according to a “quick estimateof the INE, is “reflecting an accelerated loss of purchasing power, a rapid devaluation of salaries and pensions and the impoverishment of broad layers” of the population.

“What is required are not palliative and welfare measures, but rather to increase salaries and pensions to recover purchasing power,” argued the member of the Political Commission of the PCP Central Committee.

From the point of view of the party, it is also necessary to regulate prices and tax the profits of economic groups to “prevent speculationand bet on national production as a method to alleviate external dependence.

Vasco Cardoso argued that “it is not only inflation that is growing spectacularly”, but that the profits of the economic groups associated with energy, large distribution, banking and telecommunications are “reaching impressive levels”, but that they build “on the basis of speculation”. and the aggravation of exploitation”.

The PCP accuses the PS, PSD, CDS-PP, Chega and IL of acting “against the interests of the workers.”
