Left Bloc wants to stop the sale of the CGD building in Aveiro

The Left Bloc (BE) wants to stop the sale to individuals of the Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) building in Aveiro, and defends its public use, possibly with municipal services, a party source said on Wednesday.

In a statement, BE states that, “at a time when the public bank is putting the building up for sale for 3.4 million euros”, it intends to present a motion to the Municipal Assembly of Aveiro to defend a “public solution for the building CGD “Aveiro”.

With the initiative, Bloco de Esquerda also intends to contradict the intention of the Chamber of Aveiro to deactivate the current Homem Cristo High School, the first building to be built in the country for a high school, in the 19th century.

The municipality has already prepared to build new facilities for the Homem Cristo School, in exchange for being able to occupy the building with its services, located in Praça da República, next to the City Hall.

In the motion “For a public solution for the Caixa Geral de Depósitos building in Aveiro”, which will be presented to the Municipal Assembly, “the Block proposes an alternative using the CGD building to house public services, that is, municipal services ”.

BE’s motion argues that “the Caixa Geral de Depósitos building located at Rua do Clube dos Galitos, Aveiro, should not be sold”, and that “a public solution should be sought from the Government and the board of directors of Caixa Geral de Deposits “for said building, whether to house municipal services, or other public services, or of public interest.”

“Public real estate assets, especially in areas of high real estate pressure, must be preserved and managed to counteract real estate speculation practices”, concludes BE.
