The presence of tax inspection on the ground will be reinforced

The presence of the AT tax inspection among taxpayers will be reinforced throughout this year, said Wednesday the Secretary of State for Tax Affairs, António Mendonça Mendes.

The inspection, which has never stopped, will naturally once again have a more visible presence with economic agents throughout this year”, said the Secretary of State, noting that, “overcoming the constraints of the pandemic”, it will be “natural that to witness this year of a greater presence of the inspection in the field”.

António Mendonça Mendes, who is being heard in the Budget and Finance Committee on the 2021 report on the fight against fraud and tax and customs evasion, has said “that this reinforcement is” foreseeable depending on what the resumption is of economic activity”.

Actions more focused on compliance awareness and taxpayer information and verification of compliance, in particular with billing systems, will be at stake.

According to the report, the Tax inspection carried out 22,098 verification and verification actions in 202114.9% less than the previous year, and 22.8% were related to private taxpayers.

The document details that, of this total of 22,098 actions, 17,056 actions involving legal persons (77.2%) and 5,042 actions involving natural persons (22.8%) were carried out.

Throughout last year, the Tax Administration also carried out 4,769 external inspection actions aimed at companies, to which were added some 44,700 preventive control actions, which aimed, in particular, to collect information, joint actions with other public administration bodies, control of goods in circulation and analysis of VAT refunds.

Added together, all these actions add up to 66,791, which represents a decrease of 6.9% compared to the 71,741 recorded in 2020.

During the inspection actions carried out, voluntary rectifications and regularizations have been registered for an amount of 1,326 million euros, of which 620 million (46.7%) correspond to rectifications carried out by the Large Taxpayers Unit (UGC), which represents a increase with respect to the weight of 44.7% registered in 2020.

Mendonça Mendes also said that inspection actions are not the only means to deter tax evasion and highlighted that the alert system led to the voluntary regularization of around 600 million euros.
