The European Commission wants to impose a reduction in consumption during the three or four daily hours of greatest demand for electricity in each member state. The objective is to ensure compliance with a binding target of 5% reduction in total electricity consumption, but concentrated in the hours of greatest demand. These are also the ones where prices are higher because there is a need to use gas-fired power plants to cover peak demand. Brussels estimates that it will be necessary to lower demand by at least 10% of the hours each month.
This will be one of the most sensitive aspects in the negotiation of the proposals formalized this week and that must be approved by a qualified majority in the European Council of Energy Ministers that is scheduled for September 30.
