At the end of the meeting of Energy Ministers of the European Union in Brussels, Duarte Cordeiro commented that “Today was another important day”with the adoption of “a set of important decisions at European level” to deal with energy prices, including a taxation of the excess profits of fossil fuel companies, which will become a solidarity contribution, which, he stressed, “Portugal voted in favor” and that will be transposed into the national legal system once the regulation is formally approved.
The regulation on an emergency intervention that this Friday received the political endorsement of the 27 It also contemplates a cap on the profits of companies that produce electricity with low costs (renewables).and electricity consumption reduction plans, voluntary (10% for general demand), and mandatory (5% during peak hours).
Duarte Cordeiro added that “there was also a discussion about limiting the price of gas, and it was not possible at that level to reach a final decision, and there was a recommendation for the European Commission to present concrete proposals at a future meeting.” .
“We can say that, for our part, there is a natural follow-up to all the decisions that were made today, and there is great concern that the Commission continues to work to try to limit the price of gas, obviously being careful not to provoke this limitation there is no interruption in the supply”, he stressed.
