The Social Security Institute carried out an inspection at the home of the Santa Casa da Misericordia in Boliqueime (Algarve), where an elderly woman was allegedly a victim of abandonment, but found no other similar situation, the institute reported Thursday.
The case was reported on September 20, when it became known, through a video uploaded to social networks, that an 86-year-old woman was lying in bed, with open wounds and dozens of ants in various parts of her Body.
At that time, the Santa Casa da Misericordia de Boliqueime, responsible for the Residential Structure where the old woman was, announced that it had opened an investigation to determine responsibilities in the alleged case, which it described as “serious negligence.”
In response to questions from the Lusa agency, the Social Security Institute now says that it carried out an inspection on September 8, which included an element of the Republican National Guard (GNR), an environmental health technician, a nurse and a delegate of health.
The investigation process is ongoing and no situation similar to the one reported has been verified,” says the ISS.
Secondly, admits that two days before, on September 6, he received a complaint regarding a situation of “possible mistreatment of an elderly woman, a user of the Santa Casa de Misericordia de Boliqueime home,” an investigation process being “immediately opened and the Public Ministry informed of the content of the aforementioned complaint.”
“With the criminal process underway, for the time being, until the conclusions of the same are known, Social Security does not pronounce itself on the matter,” says the ISS.
It also adds that, in terms of inspections, the ISS “follows a strategy of proactive interventions based on the identification of various risk factors, such as the results of follow-up actions or the receipt of complaints.”
Although the case of the user was known in September, the events date back to July, and the old woman died a month later.
