Inflation eases for the third consecutive month and stands at 8.3% in January

Inflation registered a variation of 8.3% in the first month of the year, compared to the same month of 2022, according to the quick estimate of the National Institute of Statistics (INE). This evolution confirms the slowdown in the rise in prices that has been observed since November. In December, the interannual inflation rate was 9.6%, so the data for January corresponds to a rate 1.3 percentage points lower than that of the previous month.

The main contributor to this slowdown in prices was the energy sector, adds the INE, whose year-on-year rate of change fell for the third consecutive month to 6.8% in January, compared to the 20.8% registered in December. Food (unprocessed products) continue to push prices up with a variation of 18.5% compared to January 2022, higher than the 18.5% growth observed in December.
