Crimes detected in home inspections are always reported to Justice

The vice president of the Social Security Institute guaranteed this Wednesday that all situations detected as a crime in the field of home inspections are communicated to the Public Ministry, an organization that has closed 874 irregular homes in the last eight years.

“All the situations that we detect in which we identify that there are criminal actionsus We communicate all of them to the Public Ministry“said Catarina Marcelino, before the deputies of the Social Security and Inclusion Commission, where she was being heard, at the request of the Communist Party, about the reality of illegal housing.

According to the person in charge, it is then the Public Ministry itself that evaluates and follows up on these actions from a criminal point of view.

According to Catarina Marcelino, there are owners of illegal houses that close an illegal house when the inspectors come, but then they open another illegal house next door and, when it ends, they return to activity again.

“All this is communicated to the Public Ministry,” he said.

He added that “in some situations, there are organized groups that lead to actions in which the Judicial Police itself intervenes, as happened in Palmela.”

ISS board member Henrique Joaquim said, for his part, that in the first months of 2023, Until March 15, 87 inspections were carried out in homes and that in the last eight years 879 houses were closed, of which 874 were illegal.

According to the official, the Social Security Institute currently has 260 inspectors, 53 specifically for inspection actions in Residential Structures for Older Adults (ERPI), having also left the guarantee that, whenever illegal equipment is detected, programming an inspection action.

Catarina Marcelino acknowledged that, “despite all the investment”, Social Security is aware that in certain areas of the country, especially in the metropolitan areas and on the coast, “demand is greater than supply, which leads to illegal business“.

“In these situations, the intervention is always the responsibility of the inspection, with the immediate removal of people when hygiene and well-being conditions do not exist,” said the person in charge.

The Vice President of Social Security also highlighted that the aging of the population has been a constant in recent decades, pointing out that in the year 2000 there were 98.8 elderly people for every young person, a figure that currently stands at 182.7.
