After all, it won’t be in September anymore. The Government has once again postponed the application of the tax on single-use aluminum containers for take-away meals and, this time, it will not come into force until January 1, 2024.
The new date was published this Tuesday in the Diário da República. The rate, of 30 cents, was provided for in the State Budget for 2021, which would enter into force on January 1, 2023, but it was postponed to September 1 of this year – and now, at the beginning of next year. In the case of plastic packaging, the tax, whose objective is to promote sustainability, is already in force.
“The contribution on single-use containers applies as of July 1, 2022, for plastic or multi-material containers with plastic, and from January 1, 2024, for aluminum or multi-material packaging containing aluminum”, reads the ordinance published this Tuesday, signed by the Secretaries of State for Finance, Nuno Félix, and for the Environment, Hugo Pires.
The postponement of the measure is explained by the Government due to the “limitations expressed by various economic agents, as well as the need to extend the scope of application of this ordinance to other matters”.
