Taxpayers will be able to allocate 1% of their IRS to social institutions

This Thursday, the Government approved a bill so that the IRS allocation for social, cultural, environmental and now even sports institutions can increase to 1%, doubling the current 0.5%.

It is a measure that was included in the electoral program and although the 2023 income campaign is still underway, in which this proposal will have no effect, the Government is already moving forward with a measure that will only have effects on the 2025 income. . Tax campaign (relative to 2024 income).

The appropriation allows part of the taxes paid to public benefit institutions. This year there were 5,000 entities eligible to receive this money.

“Starting next year, but with the income that is being received this year, the Portuguese will be able to give more to institutions that they believe provide an important service to the community. With this, on the one hand, we reinforce the freedom of choice of taxpayers. The taxes they pay are the product of their work, effort, investment and we reinforce the freedom of being able to allocate the proceeds of their taxes,” highlights Leitão Amaro.

This reinforcement of the allocation means, on the other hand, supporting the IPSS, Misericordias, religious, etc. “It is a way of looking at public policies, reinforcing the freedom of choice of taxpayers and reinforcing support for social institutions of public benefit that play a fundamental role in our country.”

Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, Minister of Finance, quantified the budgetary impact of this increase in the allocation at 40 million.

The Minister of Finance took advantage of his presence at the press conference to indicate that the Government is detecting unexpected expenses and commitments in public accounts.
