Parliament approves proposal to create a minimum tax on multinationals

The Government’s proposal that transposes the community directive on subjecting multinationals to a minimum tax of 15% was approved this Thursday in Parliament.

The proposal, voted in generalspecialty and global final, had the votes against the Liberal Initiative, the abstention of Chega, BE and PCP and the vote in favor of the remaining parties, with a request from the PSD asking for exemption from the final wording (which allows the process be accelerated) approved unanimously.

This is a bill that aims to transpose into national legislation the creation of a regime that guarantees a global minimum level of taxation for groups of multinational companies and large national groups in the European Union (EU): the Second Pillar Directive.

The profits of large multinationals and national groups or companies with a joint annual turnover of at least 750 million euros will be taxed. at a minimum effective tax rate that may not be less than 15%.

According to the Secretary of State for Finance, the first declaration and payment obligation is in 2026 with reference to the year 2024.
