PRR. The Government of the Azores is committed to meeting all road execution deadlines

The Government of the Azores guaranteed this Monday that it was “fully complying with the execution deadlines” of the roads planned in the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), after announcing the approval of the Court of Auditors to the Angra do Heroísmo road project .

In a statement, the Secretary of Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructure, Berta Cabral, promises that “None of the roads planned in the PRR will remain unbuilt.“, recalling that the program finances the construction or requalification of 34 kilometers of roads on seven of the nine islands of the Azores.

“The Government of the Azores fully complies with the execution deadlines,” the note reads.

The assigned Azores PRR 60 million euros for the logistics circuitwhich foresees the construction of ten variants on the islands of Terceira, Santa María, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico, Faial and São Miguel.

The executive of the Azores (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) adds that the Court of Auditors “has just approved the project” that will connect Via Vitorino Nemésio and Circular de Angra do Heroísmo, on the island of Terceira, an investment of more than 6.8 million euros.

“At stake in this project is the improvement of the conditions of accessibility, mobility and road safety between the connection between Via Vitorino Nemésio and Circular de Angra, as well as the connection with the parish of Posto Santo, in an approximate length of 3.1 kilometers”, details the government of the Azores.

The work will also involve the requalification of the road and sidewalks, the “increase in the radii of curvature in curves with poor visibility”, the improvement of signage and intersections and the creation of pedestrian circuits, parking and public lighting.

In the note, the regional government “thanks for the approval of the Court of Auditors”, highlighting the importance of the works on the road network to create “conditions for a more balanced economic development.”

“Interventions on the regional road network aim to reduce distances, travel times and congestion. With ongoing investments, we intend to expand and improve road infrastructure in the Azores,” reinforces Berta Cabral.

The Azorean executive also adds that an agreement was reached with the Chamber of Angra do Heroísmo, since the municipality intends to implement a “series of infrastructures under its responsibility and competence” on that road.

On July 7, 2023, the president of the Regional Government of the Azores considered “fundamental” the strategic option of qualifying and requalifying logistics circuits on seven of the nine islands of the autonomous region.

José Manuel Bolieiro was then speaking at the presentation of the works to improve the conditions of accessibility, mobility and road safety in the connection between Via Vitorino Nemésio and Circular de Angra do Heroísmo, the start of the contracting procedure was scheduled for October of that year and the start of the work, with an execution period of 454 days (18 months), scheduled for the second half of 2024.

According to the regional leader, this road connection “values ​​Angra do Heroísmo in particular, but the island of Terceira as a whole, because it also facilitates mobility to Praia da Vitória and from Praia da Vitória to Angra do Heroísmo.”
