Millions of people in China have been quarantined today because the resurgence of the Covid epidemic has caused concerns, especially in Shanghai, over the return to restrictions a month after the end of a long and debilitating lockdown.

And China’s Ministry of Health has reported 300 new coronavirus cases nationwide today.

The main affected area is Anhui Province (east), where 1.7 million people in two rural areas are currently under quarantine.

But since Sunday, injuries have been reported in Shanghai, where damage checks have been introduced in most areas, while all karaoke rooms in the city are now closed. Authorities said some of the infections could be tracked in these recreational areas.

Some Shanghai residents fear the restrictions will return five weeks after lifting a two -month lockdown in China’s largest city.

Concerns have risen as some families have received food rations, as evidenced by messages widely shared on social media.

For its part, the city government said in a memo that entertainment venues, including bars, internet cafes and karaoke bars, will close from midnight on Wednesday and Thursday.

“All the infections are associated with the Omicron PA5.2 mutant,” Ma Zhaofeng, a health spokesman in Xi’an, told reporters, stressing that infection monitoring is still ongoing.

Nomura Bank estimates that at least 114 million Chinese are currently subject to various restrictions, including travel restrictions. Just a week ago there were 66 million.
