The film “O Sanche”, by Portuguese director Pedro Costa, will be screened in a restored version during the Venice (Italy) and New York (USA) film festivals, the production company OPTEC Filmes announced on Monday.
According to the producer, “O Sangue” is included in the Venice Critics’ Week, the parallel program of the festival, where Pedro Costa made the world premiere of this first fiction feature film, in 1989.
The Venice Film Festival will take place from August 31 to September 10 and the schedule will be announced on Tuesday.
In the United States, Pedro Costa’s film will be screened at the 60th New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center from September 30 to October 16.
The restored version of “O Sangue” is the result of a digitalization work of the original negative of the film, in black and white, preserved in the Portuguese Cinematheque.
“La Sangre”, about two brothers who swear to keep their father’s secret, stars Pedro Hestnes, Nuno Ferreira, Inês de Medeiros, Luís Miguel Cintra and Canto e Castro, among others.
Cinematography is by Martin Schafer, with additional photography by two great names in Portuguese cinema: Elso Roque and Acácio Almeida.
Pedro Costa has an award-winning film career, with most of his films debuting at international festivals.
His filmography includes, for example, “Casa de Lava” (1994), screened at Cannes, “Bones” (1997), awarded at Venice, “In Vanda’s Room” (2000), “Cavalo Dinheiro” (2014) and “Vitalina Varela” (2019), all distinguished in Locarno.
