the pages of so many tropical truth, the first reference appears to the future friendships that would define Caetano’s future: “Caetano, come see the black man you like,” Doña Canô said to her son, and the son (Caetano himself) nodded and sat down in front of the television, on which Gilberto Gil’s screen appeared. Caetano, who turns 80 today, lives a life of this: quoting or honoring those he admires in the lyrics of his songs or in his own biography – they say that humble geniuses do not exist, and certainly Caetano has his diva side, but there are at least geniuses who are grateful for the genius of others, geniuses who are amazed at the world and who do not believe that they can be reduced to their navel or throat. Of all the geniuses the world has known, Caetano is perhaps the genius most grateful for the genius of others.
