What kids do (and think) when we’re not looking

Eskil Vogt appears in the credits of Joachim Trier’s films as screenwriter, “Oslo, August 31st”, “Deafening”, “Thelma” and, of course, “The Worst Person in the World”. “The Innocents” is the second feature film and probably one of the scariest looks at how children experience the world. It can be a “hard-to-watch” movie, especially for those with children, but the biggest challenge is in the real way in which Vogt exposes a “what if”: what if what children imagine was real and only perceivable? in the face of themselves, but with consequences in the real world? This is what happens: a family moves to the outskirts of Oslo and the children make new friends in the neighborhood. Between games, they discover that they have superpowers: they can make things happen with just their minds. Discovery gives way to play, but when it stops being a simple discovery, it goes elsewhere.

What is hardest is not seeing children use such powers -or the consequences of them- but how innocence is maintained: Vogt extrapolates everything to the real world, but keeps the truth always intact in the children’s universe. It is the fact that only they know what is happening that moves the viewer so much and makes this thriller a strange combination between the magic of childhood and the violence of superpowers (or, if you will, about the origin of superheroes ) of the last times.

“Os Inocentes” marks the return of Bold, a parallel brand of Alambique that likes risk films. And what a nice way to go back. Eskil Vogt’s film can be seen in Lisbon, at the Fernando Lopes Cinema, and will premiere simultaneously at Filmin. The director was in Lisbon several months ago (the film is original from 2021), we spoke with him and it was inevitable to start with the inspiration: the children.
