Archaeologists have discovered more than 300 tombs dating back about 4,500 years in central China’s Henan province. This was reported by the Chinese news agency Xinhua.
These findings are of great importance for the study of the burial system and social structure of prehistoric China. According to the Luoyang Municipal Institute of Archeology, the burial complex at the Suyang Archaeological Monument in Luoyang city covers an area of approximately 15,000 square meters, and all the burials are made of earthen, rectangular pits.
The group of tombs is very large and in its appearance you can see the traces of the transition period from the Yangshao culture to the Longshan culture. It is extremely rare to see this in Zhongyuan, an area known as the Central Plain.”said Zhen Guang, head of the excavation project in the Suyang parking lot.
Currently, archaeologists have excavated nine tombs, in which skeletons of 10 people have been found. Some tombs have been looted in the past.
The Suyang archaeological site covers an area of more than 600,000 square meters. Luoyang Municipal Archaeological Institute started excavations here in early 2021 and is still ongoing.
