Three-eyed contemporaries of dinosaurs woke up in the desert of America after the rain

In the US, storm Hilary brought heavy rains to the Black Rock Desert. The New York Post newspaper writes that some of the oldest animals in the world arose where a large mud pit formed.

Some of the oldest crustaceans, called dinosaur shrimps or shields, have awakened after rain in the state of Nevada. According to the observations of paleontologists, these creatures emerged 250 million years ago during the time of the dinosaurs. During its development, the thyroid gland practically did not change.

These arthropods have three eyes, so they were given the scientific name Triops. Its two eyes perform the usual function, and the function of the additional eye has not yet been investigated. According to scientists, the third eye can be used to determine the degree of illumination.

Thyroid lives in tropical and Antarctic waters, feeding on soil particles, small insects and fish. The eggs of the shield can remain viable for up to 15 years when the reservoir dries up. And the hatched larvae of these crustaceans grow very quickly and have the ability to reproduce early. Source
