The working group created by the Government to analyze and change the mechanisms for the protection of children and young people delivered a report in June and, three months later, the document is still being analyzed in three ministries. To the Observer, the office of Ana Mendes Godinho, minister responsible for Social Security, gave a response similar to the one sent in July of this year, noting that the Ministry of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security, the Ministry of Justice and the office of the Deputy Minister and Parliamentary Affairsthey are reviewing the report and the proposals to strengthen and perfect the system for the promotion and protection of children and young people in situations of danger that arose”.
This working group was announced over a year ago, in June of last year, a few days after the death of three-year-old Jéssica Biscaia after multiple attacks in Setúbal. And the objective of the changes would be precisely to avoid scenarios similar to that of Setúbal, which in fact led to the sentencing of Jessica’s mother and three other defendants to 25 years in prison. Despite the quick announcement, the group was only formed about five months later, in early November.
