Gilberto Gil receives honorary doctorate from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa

The Brazilian musician and composer Gilberto Gil will receive the title of honorary doctor from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in October, as revealed this Tuesday by the institution.

Gilberto Gil’s three concerts in Portugal—on October 30 and 31 at the Coliseu de Lisbon, and on November 2 at the Coliseu do Porto— They are part of the European tour “Aquele Abraço”.

This tour celebrates the musician’s 60-year career and 50 years of international touring. On this family tour, Gilberto Gil is accompanied by his children Bem and José, and his grandchildren João and Flor, reviewing the successes of his artistic career and the concert halls that, for decades, welcomed him in Europe.

Born in 1942, in Salvador da Bahía, Brazil, Gilberto Gil began his musical career in the 1950s playing the accordion, “inspired by Luiz Gonzaga, the sound of the radio and the processions outside his house in the interior of Bahia, until João Gilberto appears bossa nova, and also Dorival Caymmi, with his songs impregnated with the beach and coastal world,” as described by the promoter IM.par.
