Porto/Post/Doc will have a thematic program for three years on the “Popular Movement”

The documentary “Stop – Rehearsal rooms for a historical materialism” about the commercial center of Porto, lasting 20 minutes, is inspired by the history of that emblematic place, full of rehearsal rooms and studios and which saw most of its buildings sealed. its fractions in July 2023, which will leave almost 500 artists and retailers with nowhere to go.

The documentary “is a very peculiar approach, a moment of activism,” summarized the director of Porto/Post/Doc, Dario Oliveira, this Wednesday at a press conference.

Dario Oliveira also highlighted “Apocalypse in the Tropics”, by the Brazilian Petra Costa, a documentary chosen for the opening session of the festival.

“We think it is very important to start the festival with this documentary,” he said, adding that “Apocalypse in the Tropics” is dedicated to “the growing promiscuity between politics and religion in Brazil” and in other parts of the world like Brazil. USA.

“O Movimento dos Povos”, a thematic program of films and discussion forums, brings the generic theme that will be presented in three parts, during the next three editions of the festival, starting this year with “Europe does not exist, I was there.” , followed by “The Time of a Journey” (2025) and “The Country of Others” (2026), said Darío Oliveira.

It was “very difficult to choose the seven films” due to the provocative phrase “Europe does not exist, I was there” for this 2024 edition, Darío Oliveira admitted.

The seven films selected from the “Europe does not exist, I was there” program are “The Ascent” by Larisa Shepitko, “Padre Padrone” by Paolo Taviani, “Landscape in the Fog” by Theodoros Angelopoulos, “Safe Journey — Latcho Drom”, by Tony Gatlif, “The Passion of Joan of Arc”, by Carl Theodor Dreyer, “The Song of Others – A Search for Europe”, by Vadim Jendreyko, and “Take Care of Your Scarf, Tatjana”, By Aki Kaurismäki .

“The seven films come from geographical extremes and appeal to these directors’ thinking about how cinema portrayed, and often anticipated, Europe’s solutions and overcoming its worst humanitarian crises,” the press dossier reads.

The press conference also highlighted the intersection between film and music in this year’s Transmission program, in particular the “generative documentary about Brian Eno”, “the American documentary Pavement”, the “visit to the success story of Abba ”, “a look into the career of queer icon Peaches”, “the recording of Lee Ranaldo’s solo album” and the “intersections between realpolitik and ‘Soundtrack to a Coup D’Etat’ culture”.

This edition also has a children’s section, with proposals aimed at schools, a program for families and a program dedicated to young people and adolescents.

Tickets are now available, with a price of five euros and various discounts, but only at physical ticket offices in different locations.

The film festival takes place in several theaters in the city of Porto, with emphasis on Batalha Centro de Cinema, Trindade, Passos Manuel, Ferro bar, Casa Comum, Rectory of the University of Porto or the Porto Planetarium.

Previously, the organizers of the festival, which will run until November 30, had already announced that it will focus on the work of Georgian director Salomé Jashi.
