Democratic mayors of Los Angeles and San Francisco, who supported the Defend the Police movement during the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots, are now working to add more cops to the war as their cities grapple with massive crime waves.
In Los Angeles, where outgoing Mayor Eric Garcetti cut more than 10% of the police budget in June 2020, even as rioters raged on the streets, the city council said Wednesday it would not meet its new goal: recruit more officers.
Los Angeles times reported:
Los Angeles City Council will cut spending Mayor Eric Garcetti made a spending plan for the police department on Wednesday after receiving a report saying he had not met his goal of hiring police.
Last month, Garcetti suggested searching the citywide budget for 780 police officers; This is a number that will bring the LAPD to 9,735 officers, including departures. Sharon Tso, chief legislative analyst who advises the council, warned in a recent note that the LAPD will not reach that number as department staff continues to decline.

Wednesday’s vote will be held at a time when the LAPD roster is a problem in the June 7 election. Real estate developer Rick Caruso and businessman Mel Wilson wanted the LAPD to have 11,000 officers. Karen Bass and Councilor Kevin de Leon at the 9700.
In San Francisco, where Mayor London Breed once called for a reallocation of $120 million from law enforcement to the black community before changing its stance last year, the upcoming budget battle will include battles over police funding.
San Francisco Chronicle reported:
San Francisco Mayor London Breed said Wednesday that he will press for courses and investment in the police academy to recruit and keep officers in the city’s upcoming budget amid public safety concerns of residents and businesses.
Breed told business leaders Wednesday morning that public safety “will be a top priority” in the budget he will propose to executives on June 1, according to a copy of the speech. He stated that the police force was below the recommended level.

The mayor may be rejected by the Progressive-dominated board if he wants more academic class and police funding, but it’s likely that administrators will support filling vacancies. The race needs the support of administrative authorities to pass the budget.
Efforts are underway in both cities to rescue local prosecutors. In San Francisco, District Attorney Chese Boudin faced early voting in the June 7 election, while in Los Angeles County, George Gascon faced an aggressive petition for reelection.
