Costa marks a “new stage” of “full governance” in which everyone “has to be together”

The general secretary of the PS, António Costa, said this Saturday that the approval of the 2022 budget opened “a new stage”, of “full governance”, in which everyone has to “be together” in a “difficult and uncertain context” . war in Europe.

“It is a new page where we all have to be together in a difficult and uncertain context. Just as we did in these two years, when we had to face the pandemic. We must, now, continue doing, in this situation that our generations thought they would never see again, of such a barbaric war on the European continent”, said António Costa, in the video message broadcast at the opening session of the XVIII Meeting PS/Azores Regional Congress, which took place in the city of Horta, Faial Island.

With the approval of the State Budget for 2022, after the early elections that gave the PS an absolute majority in the Assembly of the Republic, “a new stage opens” in which “full governability can begin,” added António Costa .

“A new stage that we will begin, right now, with the approval of the Decent Work Agenda”, he described.

This work will continue “with the resolution of problems that currently suffocate the economy, such as the lack of human resources, speeding up mobility, from the beginning within the CPLP space.”

On the other hand, progress will also be made “to create better conditions for companies to invest, unblocking and eliminating much of the bureaucracy that hinders development prospects.” “It’s a new page,” he said.

On Friday we closed a difficult chapter in the life of the country, with the definitive approval of the General State Budgets. It was a State Budget that allows responding to the urgent needs to improve income, generate conditions for investment and for the economic recovery of the country”, he added.

The Budgets, he said, “comply scrupulously with the Autonomous Treasury Law and allow for a response to specific problems of the Regions, such as, for example, in Horta, the airport works”.

Costa also defended that Portugal must “continue to assert its voice” in Europe, praising the role that the leader of the PS/Azores, Vasco Cordeiro, will have as president of the Committee of the Regions.

“Europe is something in which Portugal must continue to assert its voice, with an increasingly strong presence. And a Europe that is not limited to the peninsula, but that extends to its Outermost Regions, that project Europe in a global world”, she said.

Among the institutions of the European Union “there is a fundamental one, which is the Committee of the Regions, where the municipalities and the Regions have representation, where all the different levels of power are represented: Regional and Local,” added Costa.

“It is a great pride for me, and surely it is a great pride for all socialists, that the candidate of the Socialist Group in the Committee of the Regions for president of the Committee during the next legislature is Vasco Cordeiro. I wish you a great election at the end of June and a great Congress to each and everyone,” he said.
