The President of the Republic said this Thursday that “there is a lack of leadership unity” in the ocean strategy and that the country cannot wait for the end of the war or the post-pandemic to act and that, otherwise, it will be too late.
“We cannot wait for the end of the war and the final costs of this war or the post-pandemic to act”Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said.
The President of the Republic, who was participating in the conference “Sea, door to the future”, in the framework of the commemoration of the 134th anniversary of the Jornal de Notícias, said he was a “unity of leadership” is needed in the ocean strategyparticularly in the area of the blue economy.
“There has been a lack of leadership unit in this strategy,” he stressed, later telling reporters that this unit was experiencing a union between “public, private and social” at national, European and global level.
The head of state also stressed that the country has a “very good opportunity” to act and carry out this strategy, referring to the funds of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). “Now we have a very good opportunity because there are funds that normally would not exist and will not exist for a very short time”he said, emphasizing that “there are moments that are unrepeatable” even if they are done in “time against the clock”.
Considering that the country’s sustainability strategy should not be “the cause of one generation against another”, but rather the “cause of all generations”, the President of the Republic said that it was necessary “to carry out the pedagogy of sustainability every every day, as it is necessary to do the pedagogy of democracy every day”.
“The Portuguese understand that the sea is important,” he said, defending, however, the lack of an “explanation” of its importance, giving as an example the importance of ports, marine research, offshore wind, energy transition and digital and even hydrogen. “This has to be done more often,” he added.
