The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said this Friday that expects the Government to quickly define the action plan and the framework to implement the National Strategy to Combat Poverty 2021-2030.
At the end of the National Congress of the European Anti-Poverty Network/Portugal, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon, the Head of State considered that there should be someone “to lead the action plan”, to “avoid inter-ministerial dramas”, which is precisely to belong to everyone and not belong to anyone”.
We hope that the Government decides and decides quickly on the implementation of the strategy, the configuration of the organizational structure, the definition of responsibilities, the election of the holders of these responsibilities and the contribution that each one must make to this new page to be written. , and that must be written”, he reinforced.
Regarding the action plan, according to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, it must andspecify objectives for each year, until 2030, and “distinguish the most urgentimmediate measures, what is urgent, the medium term, but what is urgent, but then what is serious, is fundamental, it is a little less urgent”.
In his opinion, “among the most urgent and urgent, for example, the agenda that points to the objective of decent work, which is expected to continue after the income policy, to the extent that the crises experienced allow it.”
The head of state expressed the They hope that the fight against poverty “is really a priority”with the mobilization of the Portuguese in general, who, he argued, “have the right and the duty to be aware of this problem, not to pretend that it does not exist.”
“It exists and it is more than an electoral campaign issue, it is more than a partisan dispute issue, it is a problem, unfortunately, very structural, very old, very persistent and very reluctant to change. But that is what we are here for, to force change,” he concluded.
The President of the Republic reiterated that he expects the Government to designate “a structure to monitor the situation on the ground, and above all the most urgent measures to combat poverty.”
Asked about the intention declared today by the Prime Minister, António Costa, to listen to the newly elected president of the PSD on issues such as the location of the new Lisbon airport and the high-speed train, the President of the Republic stressed that Luís Montenegro “is elected, but the term has not yet started.
“Therefore, I take note of this availability, which, by the way, was promised by the Prime Minister just after the elections and when he took office. Let’s see how it happens, how far it can go and what is the response of the interlocutors. Let’s wait,” he advised.
