The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who received his Polish counterpart in Braga on Wednesday night, considered that the meeting “went extremely well” and said that he had been invited to go to Poland.
“Obviously I’m not going to comment on what we discussed, but it went very well,” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa told reporters on his way out of City Hall, where he met with Polish President Andrzej Duda for about two hours. hours, until about midnight.
Without wanting to go into detail about the issues discussed at this meeting, the head of state said: “What I can say, I can say this part, is that [Andrzej Duda] He was very, very insistent that I go to Poland. I had already made the invitation a long time ago, strongly insisted that it be, if possible even before the summer“.
“Let’s see if I can do it before the summer, because I have a terrible schedule,” he said.
The President of the Republic stated that “the Poland belongs to a group called B9 of Eastern European countries that also have their regular meetingsand the next one, which plays a very important role”.
In addition to Poland, the Bucharest 9 (B9) group includes Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stressed that Poland “is geographically located at a very sensitive point” and added that “everything that concerns the world in general but Europe in particular at this time is important and has been addressed” at this meeting.
Hours before this meeting, the Head of State stated that he would listen to his Polish counterpart, at his request, about the decisions being prepared within the European framework regarding Ukraine and the NATO Summit.
He was also scheduled to receive his Slovak counterpart on Wednesday night, but according to a note issued by the Slovak Presidency, Zuzana Caputová tested positive for the Covid-19 virus and that is why he no longer traveled to Braga.
Presidents of Poland and Slovakia go to Braga to speak with Marcelo
According to this note, the president of Slovakia would travel with Andrzej Duda to Portugal and Italy to support the granting of Ukraine’s candidate status to the EU and to discuss energy security and possible alternative gas supplies to Slovakia.
