Fewer than 10 percent of Americans are following the January 6 committee hearing, according to a new ABC News poll.
ABC News, along with Ipsos, found that only nine percent of Americans were “very close” to the committee’s January 6 television hearing.
The ABC News poll came after the committee completed the first full week of televised sessions. The committee held three public hearings, with four more to be held in June.
So far, thanks to the committee’s efforts, the number of Americans who believe former President Donald Trump should be tried for the January 6 riots in the Capitol has increased by only six percent.
Although the committee has positioned itself as “bipartisan,” an ABC poll showed that the hearings were divided along partisan lines. For example, 91 percent of Democrats believe that Trump should be accused of rioting in the Capitol, while less than 20 percent of Republicans believe so.
Additionally, two Republican members on the nine-member committee were selected by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) after rejecting nominations submitted by House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy (D-CA).
Trump criticized the “unelected” committee at the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference on Friday.
“There is no clearer example of the menacing spirit that pervades the American Left than in an embarrassing performance by an unelected committee,” Trump said. “They are scammers, swindlers.”
Trump also criticized the committee that the Democratic Party chairs. Benny Thompson (D-MS) and Republican Representative. Liz Cheney (R-WY) for taking witness statements out of context.
“The committee refused to play tapes of people saying nice things we wanted to hear. This is a one-way street. This is a fraudulent deal,” Trump added.
Trump’s criticism was echoed in comments by former Trump adviser Jason Miller, who accused Cheney and the committee of fraudulently editing parts of his testimony during the committee’s first session.
