Georgia Republicans Mike Collins and Rich McCormick defeated two candidates backed by former President Donald Trump in the state primary on Tuesday.
The Associated Press pitted Collins’ career against the former Rep. Vernon Jones from the state about an hour after the election closes. Unofficial results at the time of this writing suggest Collins is about 50 percent ahead of Jones.
McCormick’s career against Evans, a lawyer specializing in electoral law, is a little closer but still decisive, presstime results show McCormick leading more than 30 percent.
Trump invested heavily in Georgian primary election to overthrow Gov. Brian Kemp and other incumbent Republicans who were openly attacked by the former president during the Georgia election process in 2020.
Jones initially ran for governor, but stopped that race in Trump’s call to clear the way for Kemp’s rival, which resulted in Kemp’s first-day defeat.
Jones joined the race against Collins in Georgia’s Tenth Congressional District (a rural northeastern Georgia county that loves Trump) and soon had Trump’s backing.
But while Trump’s support has so far worked well for candidates in most other states, it has failed in Georgia. Of the eight inactive candidates, Trump chose support, six defeated, most by a wide margin.
