The Comunidade Israelita do Porto (CIP/CJP) distances itself from the discussion around the draft amendments to the Nationality Law, justifying the suspension of the issuance of certificates of descent of Sephardic Jews with an “anti-Semitic campaign”.
The Jewish Community of Porto has never commented on the new nationality regulation, it has no interest in discussing possible changes to the law and it has long since suspended the certification work it was carrying out. The reason was the anti-Semitic campaign directed against him, which is already in the museums and in the future, when the legal framework allows it, it will be widely documented, with facts, documents, photographs and protagonists”, says the CIP/CJP.
In a statement, the Porto organization recalls that the “Portuguese State is sovereign to produce the legislative changes it deems appropriate at any time” and that it has already presented “suggestions” in 2020 and 2021 so that the regulation “contains a more current version ”. connection of the applicants with Portugal”, pointing out that “the State would have the last word”.
At the same time, the CIP/CJP criticized the publication, in March of this year, of the new nationality regulations, considering that “there was great suspicion” at the time and that the controversy surrounding alleged abuses in the granting of Portuguese citizenship under the regime for descendants of Sephardic Jews was “artificially created” against the CIP/CJP.
Last week, the CIP/CJP sent an opinion to the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees on the bills presented by the PCP and Livre that directly target the regime for granting nationality to descendants of Sephardic Jews.
Nationality Law. Israeli community of Porto accuses the State of “anti-Semitism” and of listening to “the rabble of society”
Among various criticisms, the CIP accuses the State of initiating “an anti-Semitic and terrorist action against a Jewish community organized on the basis of implausible anonymous complaints perpetrated by the rabble of society”, according to the document sent to parliament, which indicates that in 2020 “a defamation campaign was unleashed against that legislation by state agents”.
