“The Government did not expect or expect a state of grace”

He took office as the new Deputy Secretary General of the PS practically at the same time that this Government took office -and, since then, the Executive (which he joined in 2018, as Secretary of State for Commerce, Services and Consumer Protection) has gone through times turbulent. In an interview with Observador, João Torres denies that there are “problems in terms of political coordination” or that the PS is “anesthetized”, but assumes that there was no state of grace – and guarantees that the Government did not “expected” that there would be: “I think that it is highly questionable that there are those who argue that António Costa is a lucky man”.

He prefers to focus on the problems – or the “ideological labyrinth” – facing the “PPD-PSD”, including the “destruction” of regionalization. But, then, what interlocutors do the PS have left? For the socialist, the proof that the PS is available for dialogue is that in these State Budgets there were “only two deputies” who abstained – as for the left, they still need to make a “very careful and accurate reflection” about the position you took in the last EO. With some relief for now not being on the side of a PCP that has a position on Ukraine that, for Torres, is not “understood.”
