Government and National Association of Portuguese Municipalities sign agreement for decentralization in education and health

The Government and the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP) signed this Friday, in Coimbra, the sectoral agreement to commit to the decentralization of powers in the fields of Education and Health.

The signing session of the agreement, which will take place at the ANMP headquarters, in the city of Coimbra, at 5:00 p.m., will be attended by the Prime Minister, António Costa, the Minister of Education, João Costa, the Minister of Health, Marta Temido, and the Minister of Territorial Cohesion, Ana Abrunhosa.

The ANMP approved, on Monday, a proposal for an agreement on the decentralization of powers with the Governmentfor the areas of education and health, reaching “an enormous consensus”, after several months of negotiations.

The agreement was approved by a majority in the General Council of the ANMP, with the votes in favor of the mayors elected by the PS and PSD and the votes against the mayors of the Communist Party.

At that time, the president of the ANMP, Luísa Salgueiro, welcomed the “huge consensus” reachedafter having worked, in recent months, “in deep articulation with the Government”, to “stabilize rules” in the areas of education and health.

According to the also president of the Matosinhos City Council, in the approved agreement, regarding the area of ​​education, “there will be a participation in school maintenance works depending on the number of years they are” and school meals “are now subject to a Government contribution of 2.75 euros”.

It also includes a map of priority schools to rehabilitate, “which may still be subject to correction”, in which “there are 451 schools”, while, in terms of co-payments, “expenses with insurance and ADSE co-payments are covered”.

Regarding the health area, the president of the ANMP said that the mapping of investments to be made has already been validated by the Government, as well as in relation to the needs with personnel.

“We have fully satisfied the demands that have been transmitted to us,” he said.
