President of the Republic of Cape Verde begins a state visit to Portugal with a meeting with Marcelo

The president of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves, begins this Thursday his first state visit to Portugal since he was elected, with a meeting with his Portuguese counterpart in Lisbon.

According to the program of the State visit, released by the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, José Maria Neves, who is visiting Portugal at the invitation of the Portuguese President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, is accompanied by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs. and Regional Integration, Rui Figueiredo Soares, and Communities, Jorge Santos, as well as the president of the National Association of Municipalities of Cape Verde, Herménio Fernandes.

On this first day of the state visit, José Maria Neves, elected in October 2022 and Prime Minister of Cape Verde from 2001 to 2016, accompanied by the First Lady, Débora Carvalho, will be received at the Belém Palace by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in a “restricted meeting”which will be followed by a meeting between the delegations of the two countries.

Before, the Cape Verdean president will lay a floral offering on the tomb of Luís de Camões, in the Jerónimos Monastery, and will also be received in the Assembly of the Republic, by the president of the parliament, Augusto Santos Silva.

The Cape Verdean head of state will also visit this Thursday the headquarters of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), in Lisbon, and will address a message to the Permanent Consultative Committee, which will meet in a Special Session.

On Friday, José Maria Neves, together with the Portuguese president and his counterpart from São Tomé and Príncipe, Carlos Vila Nova, will participate in the “Dialogue between presidents”, within the framework of the 2022 edition of the EuroAfrican Forum, a global dialogue meeting promoted annually by the Portuguese Diaspora Council to strengthen ties between Europe and Africa.

The last item on the agenda of the visit includes a visit to ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa.

On July 30 and 31, the president of Cape Verde will fulfill an agenda that includes a visit to the University of the Algarve, as well as meetings with the presidents of the Portuguese town councils twinned with Cape Verdean municipalities.

Finally, according to the program sent to Lusa by the Cape Verdean Presidency, José Maria Neves “devotes an important part of his agenda to his purpose of greater proximity to the vast Cape Verdean diaspora”, anticipating a meeting with the Algarve/Loulé community and in Amadora , and will also participate in the Nhu Santiago festivities, in Oeiras.
